In our last instalment for Dental Health Week 2019, we are going to look at some general dental health information so that you can keep your oral health on track. The state of your dental health is closely related to the state of your general health. Having a good oral health routine is key to helping you to help yourself to maintain a healthy smile for life.

Why is my oral health important?

The state of your oral health is not just about a beautiful smile. A healthy mouth allows you to have proper chewing function, it helps prevent tooth decay and gum disease, and it allows you to have confidence in social and work environments. Poor oral health can also be an indicator of other general health problems, such as diseases caused by poor nutrition. Gum disease has also been linked to an increased risk of heart disease and stroke. By looking after your oral health you can prevent problems that can have a major impact on your health, as well as saving you a lot of time and expense in the long term.

How can I keep my oral health on track?

So, what are the keys to maintaining your dental health so you can keep your oral health on track?

  • Brush your teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste. This simple step removes the plaque on your teeth that causes tooth decay and gum disease.
  • Floss! Flossing removes the plaque between your teeth that your toothbrush can’t reach. Aim to floss once a day.
  • Reduce your lifestyle risks, which include:
    • Reducing your sugar intake and eating a healthy balanced diet.
    • Quitting smoking.
    • Keeping your alcohol consumption to recommended levels.
  • If you play sport, come and see us to get a custom-fitted mouth guard.
  • Visit us for regular, preventive dental check-ups.

By visiting the dentist regularly, we can assess your oral health to check if it is on track, and also detect any problems early. Dental issues identified and treated early are much quicker, easier and less expensive and painful to treat than those left to linger. Many dental issues will not cause you noticeable problems until they are well advanced, so regular check-ups can catch these problems early.
